In a shift from their early-defining shoegaze sound, rising quintet bdrmm share new single ‘John On The Ceiling’. The new song is the first preview of the Hull band’s third album Microtonic, to be released via Mogwai’s own independent label Rock Action Records. With less of a classic shoegaze inclination that much of the group’s previous work has been built upon, ‘John On The Ceiling’ is busy with an electronic pulse and oscillating synth waves for a shadowy space-age sound, led by vocalist Ryan Smith’s hazy stylings. Centred around being trapped in the purgatory of repeated mistakes, the track brings in more elements of fast-bumping dance music for a static, stir-crazed energy. A renewed sound, this sneak peek points to Microtonic as an exciting reawakening for bdrmm. -Kayla Sandiford
